We received an inquiry from a new customer who had been referred to us with an issue with her wipers not working on a Seat Leon . The story behind the failure was quite incredible with three garages including the main dealer miss diagnosing the fault and failing to repair the issue the customer was first advised by two garages of a failed wiper motor but another motor failed to fix the issue, the main dealer having the car for over a week advised that the vehicle required an expensive £1,000 + module with no guarantee of a fix and suggested either trading in the vehicle or driving it with no wipers !!!! We were intrigued and certainly up for the challenge to try and correctly diagnose this issue and repair the fault.
Our initial assessment revealed no communication with the wiper motor which is probably why other garages had advised the wiper motor had failed . The wiper motor on this vehicle has only three wires going to it a main 12 volt feed , an earth and a control signal which is a Lin signal which is a 12volt square wave form when checked on an oscilloscope . Load testing the main feed and ground proved that these where both present and able to power the wiper motor , however the Lin signal was not present hence the no communication or operation of the wiper motor .
With customer approval we investigated the missing Lin signal and traced the failure to a broken / corroded wire in the main loom running across the scuttle panel .
With the wire repaired and insulted we could confirm the fault was fixed . Our total bill was less than half of the dealer who didn’t correctly diagnose or fix the fault .
